12-Year-Old Girl Uses Self-Immolation
to Die by Suicide
by Kevin Caruso
A 12-year-old girl died by suicide on June 9, 2004, after setting herself on fire in Java, Indonesia.
The young girl, whose name was Khodijah, had been suffering from clinical depression.
Suicide by self-immolation is uncommon in the United States but is common in some parts of Asia.
Khodijah initially survived the suicide attempt, and was taken to a local hospital; she was able to speak but was in excruciating pain.
She died later that night.
Untreated depression is the number one cause for suicide.
And depression is very treatable.
If Khodijay had received treatment, she probably would be alive today.
Our children need to know that they can reach out for help, either at home or at school.
All schools should have a suicide prevention program, and Suicide.org offers a free Suicide Prevention School Guide.
You should use this guide to start a suicide prevention program in your school as soon as possible.
