Remembering Two Angels:
Fiona Barnes and Michael McComb

by Kevin Caruso

Fiona Barnes was a beautiful, intelligent young woman living in Belfast, Northern Ireland, when she met the man who she wanted to spend the rest of her life with, Michael McComb.

Fiona and Michael fell deeply in love with each other.

But Michael was suffering from depression. He became depressed after his 15-year-old sister was killed in March 2002 -- she was hit by a reckless-driving criminal in a stolen car.

And in May 2004, at the age of 19, Michael died by suicide.

Fiona was devastated.

About three months later, on August 1, 2004, Fiona went to the Belfast City Cemetery where Michael was buried. After spending numerous hours at the cemetery, she walked to a tree near Michael's grave, and hanged herself.

Fiona was 18.

On August 4, Fiona was buried next to Michael.

Fiona's father said that after Michael died Fiona spent most of her time at Michael's grave. "I would not say she had this planned. I would say she had thought about it [and she died by suicide] after she sat beside his grave all night."

Fiona was suffering from severe depression.

And untreated depression is the number one cause for suicide.

Both Michael and Fiona did not receive the treatment that they needed for their depression.

If you think that you may be suffering from depression, please make appointments with a medical doctor and therapist so you may be evaluated and treated.

It should also be noted that whenever someone loses a family member or a loved one to suicide, the risk for that person to die by suicide goes up dramatically.
