Few People Know What Bipolar Disorder is;
Untreated Bipolar Disorder Can Cause Suicide

by Kevin Caruso

In a survey conducted by The Nation's Voice on Mental Illness (NAMI), 78 percent of Americans polled failed to name bipolar disorder as a mental illness, and 38 percent could not name any of the symptoms of bipolar disorder.

Over 2 million Americans suffer from bipolar disorder.

"The impact of untreated bipolar disorder on a person's life is huge," said Richard Birkel, executive director of NAMI.

And Richard is right.

25 to 50 percent of people with bipolar disorder will attempt suicide.

So what is bipolar disorder?

It is a brain disorder that causes strong mood swings or "episodes."

People who have the illness go from feeling fantastic, with an abundance of energy, to feeling horrible, with no energy.

It is akin to being on an emotional roller coaster ride.

But bipolar disorder is highly treatable. Treatment includes taking mood-stabilizing drugs.

Bipolar disorder is never cured, but can be effectively controlled with the mood-stabilizers and therapy.

We all need to learn more about bipolar disorder. It is a very common mental illness, but, again, if it is untreated, can cause suicide.
