Remembering an Angel:
Crystal Lee Drozd

by Ulyssia Sarbocca (Crystal's sister), and Kevin Caruso

Happy Birthday Baby Sister. I Love You!

Crystal Lee Drozd was born on June 11, 1981, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She weighed 7 pounds, had a head full of jet black hair, and was incredibly beautiful.

Crystal is born!

And although I was only 5 years old at the time, I can still vividly remember the day Crystal was born. I remember hugging my mom’s belly and realizing that she didn’t have a belly anymore...because there no longer was a baby inside! And I remember seeing my beautiful little sister for the first time.

And even though I was very young, I knew right away that I had a big responsiblity – to take care of my little sister for the rest of her life. And that is exactly what I did. I always watched out for her and protected her.

I have to admit that we were like oil and water when we were younger, but when when you mixed us up, we were a fantastic duo!

And as we got older, we grew even closer because we realized that all we had was each other, and our appreciation and love for each other grew immensely and we became best friends.

Best friends!
Best friends!

Crystal possessed a great sense of humor and we shared many laughs and wonderful times together.

And in her teens I watched her change from a young girl struggling to find her way to a confident young woman who had a great passion for life and wanted to help others.

And one of the ways she helped others was by joining Partnership of America, a nonprofit organization which worked to stop vendors from selling cigarettes to minors. Crystal was very active in the organization and was rewarded for her diligent efforts with an invitation to meet President Clinton in the White House. Crystal was one of a select few teenagers invited to this special event, and while she was there she also met several celebrities and important people. Crystal had a wonderful time.

One of Crystal's passions in life was riding horses. She went from learning to ride on an older, past-her-prime mare, to being a top competitor in local equestrian competitions.

She told me that one of her dreams was to become a Mounted Patrol Officer for the Pennsylvania State Police.

Crystal became an angel on March 20, 1997, when my father’s suicide inadvertently took her life as carbon monoxide fumes filled our Pennsylvania home. She was only 15 years old.

Her dreams and accomplishments are only memories now...but those memories will NEVER die.  And Crystal lives on in our hearts. She will always be with us in countess ways.

So on this day, Crystal's birthday, I will blow her candles our for her, and atop the smoke that slowly rises in the air, my hugs, kisses, and love will gently ascend to Heaven to be with her. And in Heaven, Crystal will blow out her own candles in celebration of the great life that she had, the deep love that she shared with us, and the wonderful memories she left behind.

Happy 27th Birthday Crystal, I love you!
