Third Suicide in Four Months at High School
in Pretoria, South Africa
by Kevin Caruso
July 21, 2004
Daniel Venter, 16, of Centurion High School in Pretoria, South Africa, died by suicide on July 20 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Heidi Botha and Kobus Geyser, both 14, also Centurion High students, died by suicide within the last four months.
The suicides have caused great distress to the students, and actions are being taken by the school to help students cope with the trauma.
A peer-support training program has been implemented as well as a "buddy system."
The buddy system is designed to help teachers and students spot anyone at the school who is depressed so they may receive help.
